Construction Traffic Coming Soon to SR 9

At the Town Council Meeting On April 8, 2026, representatives form Zion Canyon Fiber Optics gave a presentation on the upcoming project to install fiber optics along SR 9,. “The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT), in partnership with the National Parks Service, is undertaking a significant project to install middle-mile fiber optics to support last-mile connectivity to communities along State Route 9 and the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway. This initiative is part of UDOT's broader effort to expand and modernize the state's fiber optic infrastructure, enhancing connectivity and supporting Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) (including traffic cameras, road signs, and weather stations) throughout Utah.” In the long term this is a good thing. In the short term, there will be times when driving along SR 9 will be expletive-inducing and, wouldn’t you know, it’s going to be during high tourism season. It’s scheduled to start as early as Monday, June 1 and projected to be completed by the end of 2026.

As frustrating as this may seem and become, the presentation included the many steps taken and variables considered as they are sincerely trying to lessen the impact for locals. You may view the meeting here: <https://www.youtube.com/@SpringdaleTownPublicMeetings> time stamp 9:45 to 30:00 is when Nancy Cozzens and Ava Pecora presented their information. I think Town Council member, Tom Campbell, summarized it best when he said, “It seems you’ve covered as many bases as possible, even going above and beyond, and this is just the cost of doing business. We’ll just have to grin and bear it.”

Hopefully, this forewarning will allow us to forearm ourselves with patience and extra time when traveling SR 9 during the installation.
