Fall Back, Move Forward

Turn the Time Change Into Your Personal Reset Button

Fall Back, Move Forward

So, did you remember to turn your clock back on November 1? Maybe you enjoyed that extra hour of sleep, or maybe you're wondering why it seems to get dark before you've even finished your afternoon!

The fall time change can do more than confuse our schedules. It can disrupt sleep, affect our energy, and make it tempting to trade our walking shoes for slippers and the couch.

But what if we looked at this seasonal shift differently? Instead of treating the time change as another inconvenience, what if we used it as an opportunity to reset, refocus, and feel better?

Our internal body clock, known as the circadian rhythm, helps regulate sleep and alertness. When our schedules change, our bodies may need time to adjust. Rather than fighting the change, we can use it as a reminder to check in with ourselves.

Here are five simple ways to move forward!

1. Reset your sleep routine. Aim for a consistent bedtime and wake-up schedule. Create a relaxing evening routine and give yourself enough time for quality sleep. Remember, an extra hour on the clock doesn't automatically mean an extra hour of restful sleep!

2. Move with the daylight. Shorter days can make exercise feel less appealing. Getting outside for a morning walk provides natural light that helps support your sleep-wake rhythm. Even 10–15 minutes of walking can be a great way to start your day.

3. Fuel your energy. When we're tired, it's easy to reach for extra caffeine or sugary snacks. Instead, focus on balanced meals with protein, fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, and fiber-rich foods. Drink water regularly and plan meals ahead to avoid those last-minute, hungry decisions.

4. Build one small habit. You don't need an hour at the gym or a complete life makeover. Five or ten minutes of movement, a few stretches, or a short walk is a good place to start. Small actions, repeated consistently, can add up to meaningful progress.

5. Change your self-talk. How often do we say, "It's too dark to exercise," or "I'll get back on track after the holidays"? Instead, try a different approach: "This is my opportunity to reset my routine." A small shift in thinking can help us make better choices.

Your Challenge: Move Forward!

Choose one healthy habit to practice this week. Go to bed a little earlier, take a morning walk, drink more water, or get up from your chair more often. Don't aim for perfection. Aim for consistency.

The truth is, you don't need to wait until January 1 to make a fresh start. You don't need perfect weather, a quieter schedule, or three extra hours in your day. You can begin right where you are, with what you have, one small step at a time.

We can't control the clock, the changing seasons, or every curveball life throws our way. But we can control how we respond.

So, yes, we turned the clocks back. Now let's move ourselves forward!

Here's to better habits, brighter days, and feeling our best—one small step at a time.

To your best health, Debs~
