Kinda Surprising Valentine’s Facts

I hope your day is full of love.

HAPPY Valentine’s Day!

“A FRIEND IS WHAT THE HEART NEEDS ALL THE TIME.” HENRY VAN DYKE AUTHOR

Betcha didn’t know the fun facts on the following page.

1. It might have started as a Roman festival, not purely a love day.

Some historians link Valentine’s Day to Lupercalia, an ancient Roman festival involving pairing people by lottery and fertility rites before it became a love holiday.

2. Valentine’s Day cards go way back.

The oldest known Valentine message was written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orléans, to his wife while he was imprisoned (it’s now in the British Museum).

3. Conversation hearts are massive in number.

Over 8 billion little heart candies are made each year for Valentine’s Day. AND Sweethearts started out as medicinal lozenges before becoming the conversation hearts we know today.

4. Historical quirks

From vinegar valentines (cheeky or insulting cards popular in the 1800s) to secret “Valentine Phantoms” decorating towns with hearts each year, Valentine’s has a long history of unusual customs.

5. People used to wear their Valentine’s choices on their sleeves.

In medieval times, young people pinned the name of their Valentine to their sleeve for all to see—hence the phrase “wearing your heart on your sleeve.”

6. Teachers get the most Valentine’s cards.

Worldwide, Valentine’s cards are not just for sweethearts—teachers receive more than anyone else!

7. Different cultures celebrate differently.

In Denmark, anonymous love poems are given alongside riddles, and if she guesses the sender, he earns an Easter egg.

8. There are multiple Saint Valentines.

Several early Christian figures were named Valentine, and none were officially the patron saint of love—yet tradition stuck.

9. The birds might be involved.

Legend and literature (like Chaucer’s poetry) linked Valentine’s Day with birds pairing off in spring, helping cement the romantic theme.

10. Some traditions celebrate friendship more than romance.

In Finland, Valentine’s Day (called Ystävänpäivä) focuses on friendship rather than romantic love.
