Town Hall · Op-ed

The Future Town Council Meeting

This Wednesday, April 8, CCC, 5PM

Some of the more interesting items on the agenda include:

Zion Fiber Presentation. It appears fiber optics is coming to Zion National Park.

The purchasing report is presented.

Whether to join the Utah Community Clean Energy Program is on the agenda. Town Council is expected to have very little discussion about joining the Utah Community Clean Energy Program because they have already shown support for it. The program would slightly increase electricity bills—about $4 per month—for anyone who does not choose to opt out.

This extra cost helps fund renewable energy projects in Utah, with the goal of moving to 100% renewable energy sources (like wind and geothermal) by 2030. If you believe this goal is realistic and worthwhile, the small increase in your bill could be seen as a good investment. If you are unsure or do not think the goal is achievable, you have the option to opt out and avoid the added cost. If you believe the town should not get involved in this project, you could write a letter but it is unlikely to have any effect on the outcome.

Another item on the agenda worth noting is the hiring of a third-party to conduct a community engagement effort regarding potentially adding trails in Springdale. One can hope that the hiring of Bike Utah to ascertain the community’s wants does not mean more bike trails.

There is a dynamic biking community in the canyon corridor (Virgin) and Springdale does not need to encourage visitation to our town. ZNP already brings us 5 million visitors — to make it a biker’s destination as well would be overkill and detrimental to the robust dog-walking and hiking community thriving and entrenched here. The needs of those currently here should take priority over the wants of those who might be lured here.
